The short version: a hurricane-rated garage door is one that has been tested to a specific design pressure and, near the coast, to a missile impact standard. In Coastal Georgia that means a 130 mph design wind speed zone under ASCE 7, and in Nassau, Duval, and Clay counties it means the Florida Building Code wind provisions. If your door has no rating label, no brace kit engineered for it, and no anchors in the jamb, it is the weak point of your house. Peak season here runs mid-August through October, so this is the month to look.
Why the Garage Door Fails First
A 16-foot double door is roughly 112 square feet of flat surface with almost nothing behind it. Windows are small and framed on all four sides. Walls are sheathed and braced. The garage door is a thin sheet spanning a wide opening, held only at the tracks.
When it blows in, the problem is not the missing door. It is what happens next. Wind pours into the garage and pressurizes the inside of the house while the outside stays under suction. The roof sheathing now has pressure pushing up from below and lifting from above at the same time. That is the mechanism behind most catastrophic residential storm losses on this coast, and it starts at the garage.
What "Wind-Rated" Actually Means
The phrase gets used loosely by salespeople. There are two real tests, and they are separate.
- ANSI/DASMA 108, structural performance. The door is loaded with uniform static air pressure in both directions to confirm it holds a stated design pressure without failing. Doors are typically tested to 1.5 times their rated design pressure. The result is a number in pounds per square foot, positive and negative.
- ANSI/DASMA 115, impact and cyclic pressure. The door takes a large-missile hit, then rides thousands of pressure cycles to simulate a storm's duration. The large missile is a 9-pound 2x4 fired at roughly 50 feet per second. This is the test that matters in a wind-borne debris region.
A door can pass 108 and not 115. That combination is legal in plenty of inland locations and not in a debris zone near the water. When you compare quotes, ask for the design pressure number and which standards the door was tested to. A brochure that says "hurricane resistant" with no pressure rating is marketing.
What the Code Requires Here
Coastal Georgia. Glynn, McIntosh, Camden, Chatham, Bryan, and Liberty counties sit in a 130 mph ultimate design wind speed zone under ASCE 7 for ordinary homes, and coastal Georgia counties are mapped as wind-borne debris regions. Your required design pressure is not one universal number. It depends on the door width, the building height, and the exposure category of the site, which is why the plans examiner or building department specifies it on a permit.
Northeast Florida. One correction we give homeowners every season: the Florida Building Code High Velocity Hurricane Zone is Miami-Dade and Broward counties only. Nassau, Duval, Clay, and St. Johns are not HVHZ. They follow the standard Florida wind provisions, generally 130 to 140 mph design zones, with wind-borne debris requirements near the coastline. That distinction matters because HVHZ-approved product is more expensive and is not what your permit calls for in Fernandina Beach or Jacksonville Beach.
Neither state requires you to retrofit a door that was legal when it went in. Codes apply at replacement and at new construction. That is the practical trigger: when you replace, you replace to current code, and that is the right moment to buy the rating.
Rated Door or Brace Kit?
Both exist. They are not equivalent.
A rated door is engineered as an assembly. Heavier gauge steel, more struts across each section, reinforced end stiles, heavier track, and jamb anchors sized to transfer the load into the framing. The rating belongs to the whole assembly, not the panel. That is why you cannot bolt a strut onto an unrated door and claim a rating. A brace kit is a set of vertical posts that drop into floor and header brackets before a storm and come out after. Manufacturer kits are engineered and tested for specific door models, and installed with the anchors the engineering specifies, they are a legitimate option. A generic post bought off a shelf is not a rating and will not satisfy a permit. It is still better than an unbraced door on the night of the storm, but do not confuse the two.
One thing neither fixes: rotten jambs. Anchors have to land in sound wood or masonry. On older Brunswick and Darien homes we regularly find jambs that crumble under a lag screw. That gets repaired first or the bracing is decorative.
72 Hours Before a Storm
When a system enters the forecast cone, work this list. None of it takes long, and all of it is easier now than in a rain band.
- Find your label. Look at the end stile of a section or the track for a manufacturer label with a design pressure and a test standard. Photograph it. Your insurer may want it later.
- Install the brace kit if you have one. Do it in daylight, before the wind picks up. Verify the floor bracket is clear of debris and the pin seats fully.
- Test the door under power and by hand. Pull the emergency release with the door closed and lift it manually about three feet. A balanced door stays where you leave it. If it drops or fights you, the springs are off and you want that fixed before an outage forces manual operation. Our garage door spring repair crews stay on same-day dispatch through storm season.
- Check the bottom seal and the track bolts. A hardened, cracked astragal lets water sheet in under wind-driven rain. Track lag bolts back out over years of vibration. Snug them.
- Clear the garage floor line. Move anything within three feet of the door. If water gets under the seal, it goes there first.
- Charge or verify the opener battery backup. Georgia and Florida both require battery backup on new residential openers. If yours has one and it has never been tested, test it now. If it is more than three years old, plan on a replacement battery.
- Close and latch it. Do not open the door "to equalize pressure." That myth kills roofs. Sealed is the goal.
After the Storm
Look before you push a button. An opener driving a door that is bent, off-track, or holding water weight will strip a gear or bend a rail, turning a panel problem into an opener problem.
Walk the door with the power off at the wall. Look for bowed sections, flattened struts, rollers out of the track, frayed cables, and a bottom section that has swelled from standing water. Check whether the door still sits square in the opening. If anything looks wrong, leave it closed and call. Document everything with photos before any repair starts, including the label you photographed earlier. Adjusters ask for pre-existing condition, and a rated door that performed is worth showing them.
