A garage door rides on rollers captured inside a steel track on each side. When a roller leaves that track, the door loses the geometry that holds it square. It sits crooked, binds against the frame, and stops moving. The spring above it is still fully wound, the cables are still under load, and the only thing keeping the door where it is may be the corner it snagged on. That is why an off-track door is the least stable condition a door can be in, and why the first instruction is always the same: stop using it and unplug the opener.
Most of the doors we re-track in Glynn, Camden, and Chatham counties never needed the visit twice. The re-track is the easy part. Finding what pushed the door off the rail, and fixing that, is what keeps it on.

Impact
A bumper against a closed door is the most common cause we see. The bottom section takes the hit, the bottom rollers pop, and the door racks out of square.
Seized Rollers
Salt air kills roller bearings. A stem that stops spinning drags instead of rolling, then skips the track at the curve. Coastal doors run through rollers faster than inland ones.
Cable Off the Drum
A cable that unwinds or snaps drops one side of the door while the other stays up. The door goes diagonal instantly and both sides need re-seating.
Loose Brackets
Track brackets are lagged into wood framing. Years of cycles and coastal humidity back those fasteners out, the track drifts, and the roller finds the gap.
Closing on an Obstruction
A trash can or a bike under a closing door pushes the bottom section up while the top keeps coming down. Photo eyes should catch it. Misaligned ones do not.
A Broken Spring First
Sometimes the off-track is the symptom. A broken garage door spring that dropped the door hard takes rollers and cables with it, so we check the spring on every off-track call.
Three Things To Do Now.
Unplug the opener at the ceiling outlet. Not the wall button. Anyone with a remote in a pocket can otherwise put the door through another cycle, and every cycle on an off-track door bends more track and tears more of the section. This is the single most expensive mistake available to you today.
Keep everyone out from under it. Move the cars if they are clear of the opening, and keep kids and pets out of the garage. The door is being held by friction, not by hardware, and friction lets go without warning.
Do not pry it back on. Every roller you force back in changes where the load sits, and the spring above the door is still carrying its full charge. We arrive with the door clamped before anything else happens, and that sequence is what keeps a re-track a re-track.

A straightforward re-track, where the rollers go back in and nothing is bent, typically runs 150 to 250 dollars. Off-track with cable replacement typically runs 250 to 400. If a track section is bent badly enough to replace, that typically runs 250 to 500 depending on how many sections and whether the brackets survived. You get a written quote before any work starts and the diagnostic is waived with the repair.
Can I put the garage door back on the track myself?
We strongly recommend against it. A door that has jumped the track is still under full spring tension, and it is being held in place by whatever it snagged on. Pry at the wrong point and the door can drop or the remaining rollers can pop, which turns a one-hour repair into a bent-section replacement. It is also the fastest way to get a hand caught between the door and the track.
What causes a garage door to come off track?
Five things account for almost all of them. Something struck the door, usually a vehicle bumper. A roller or its bearing seized and skipped the track. A cable came off the drum or snapped, dropping one side. A track bracket worked loose from the framing. Or the door was run down onto an obstruction and the photo eyes did not catch it.
Is an off-track garage door dangerous?
Yes, and it is the least stable state a door can be in. The weight is no longer carried evenly, the spring is still fully loaded, and the door is held by friction rather than by hardware. Stop using it, keep people and cars out from under it, unplug the opener, and call. Do not try to force it up or down.
Can you fix it the same day?
Most off-track calls are same-day work. Rollers, cables, brackets, and standard track sections ride on every truck, so the majority are diagnosed and finished in the same visit. Doors with a bent bottom section or a track pattern we do not stock may need a second trip for the part, and we tell you that at the quote, not at the end.
Will the door work normally afterward?
It should be better than it was before it jumped. We re-track the door, replace whatever failed, re-seat the cables evenly on both drums, and then run a balance test and set the opener force so the same failure does not repeat. If a roller bearing seized because of salt corrosion, we will say so and price nylon replacements, because the rest are on the same clock.
Coastal Doors Need the Roller Check.
Inland, rollers are a ten-year part. Between Brunswick and the islands, airborne chloride gets into the bearing races and a stem that should spin freely starts to drag in five or six. A dragging roller is the quiet start of most of the off-track calls we run, and it announces itself long before it jumps: a grinding note on the way up, a shudder at the curve where the vertical track turns horizontal, or black dust on the track. Any of those is worth a look. Roller replacement during an annual garage door maintenance visit costs a fraction of the re-track and section repair that follows a jump, and it is the same visit where we catch the loose lag bolts and the frayed cable.
