Start here. Press the wall button and watch what the opener does. That single observation splits the problem four ways. Nothing at all is a power fault. A hum with no movement is a drive problem. Blinking lights are the safety sensors. And a door that moves a few inches and stops is not the opener at all. Work down the list below to whichever one matches, and skip the rest.
1. Nothing Happens. No Lights, No Sound.
The opener has no power. Check the ceiling outlet with a phone charger or a lamp before touching the opener itself. Half of these are a tripped GFCI on the garage circuit, and on the coast that circuit trips after every storm that pushes water into an outdoor receptacle on the same run. Reset the GFCI, check the breaker, and confirm the plug is fully seated rather than hanging half out where a ladder caught it. If the outlet has power and the opener still shows nothing, the transformer or the logic board has failed. Both are routine repairs.
2. The Motor Hums but the Door Does Not Move.
Power is fine, the motor is turning, and nothing is reaching the door. There are two likely reasons and one easy way to tell them apart. With the door closed, press the button and look at the chain or belt on the rail.
The chain moves and the door does not. The trolley is disconnected. Somebody pulled the red emergency release cord, probably during a power outage, and it was never reconnected. Pull the cord again toward the door and run the opener until the trolley clicks back onto the carriage.
Nothing moves at all. The drive gear has stripped. That is a nylon gear inside the motor head that gives up somewhere around year ten to fifteen, and it is the single most common opener failure we replace. Look for plastic shavings on the garage floor under the motor. A gear and sprocket kit is a straightforward repair, well under the cost of a new unit.
3. The Lights Blink and the Door Will Not Close.
This one is the safety sensors, and it is the most common opener complaint that is not actually a broken opener. Two photo eyes sit six inches off the floor on each side of the opening, one sending an infrared beam and one receiving it. Break that beam and the opener refuses to close, then blinks its lights ten times to tell you why.
Walk to both sensors. Each should show a steady indicator light. Then check, in this order: something parked in the beam, a lens filmed with dust or a spider web, a bracket knocked out of line by a trash can, and direct low sun shining into the receiving eye late in the afternoon, which genuinely does blind them. Wipe both lenses dry and bend the loose bracket by hand until both lights hold steady. Do not disable the sensors. They exist because doors used to close on children.
4. The Door Starts to Close, Then Reverses Back Up.
The opener detected resistance and did what it is designed to do. If the sensors are clean and aligned, look at the door before the settings. Run your eye down both tracks for a bent section, check for a roller that has stopped turning, and look for anything in the door's path, including the weather seal folded under itself.
If the door is clear, the close force is set too low or the down travel limit is pushing the door past the floor. Both are adjustments on the motor head, and both need the reversal re-tested afterward. Turning the force up until the door stops reversing is exactly the wrong fix. That setting is what stops the door on a bumper or a person. It is not a nuisance dial.
5. The Door Opens Fine but Stops Short on the Way Up.
The up travel limit has drifted, or the door is binding at the curve where the vertical track turns horizontal. A dry or seized roller will do it, and so will a track bracket that has worked loose from the framing. Coastal garages produce more of these than inland ones because salt gets into the roller bearings. If you hear a shudder at the same spot every time, that is hardware, not electronics.
6. The Remote Does Not Work but the Wall Button Does.
The opener is healthy. The signal is the problem. In order of likelihood: a dead remote battery, a remote that lost its programming and needs re-learning to the unit, a bent or missing antenna wire hanging from the motor head, and radio interference. That last one is worth knowing about. LED and smart bulbs installed in the opener's own light sockets throw enough radio noise to cut a remote's range from a hundred feet to fifteen. If your range collapsed right after you changed the bulbs, put in an incandescent or an LED rated for garage door openers and try again.
7. The Wall Button Does Not Work but the Remote Does.
The reverse case points at the low-voltage wiring between the console and the motor head, or at the console itself. Staples driven through that wire during a drywall job are a classic, and so is a corroded terminal on the back of the console in a humid garage. This one is quick to diagnose and cheap to fix.
8. The Door Moves a Few Inches and Stops.
Stop pressing the button. This is the symptom on the list that is almost never the opener, and it is the one that gets expensive fastest. A door that lifts three or four inches, groans, and quits is telling you the springs are not carrying the weight any more, or a cable has come off its drum and the door is now binding in the track.
Test it by hand. Pull the red release cord with the door closed and try to lift the door to waist height. A balanced door rises with about two fingers of effort and stays where you leave it. 9. It Is Making a Noise It Did Not Make Before.
Sound is a good diagnostic. A grinding or crunching from the motor head is the drive gear. A rattling chain slapping the rail is a chain that needs tensioning. A squeal that follows the door up the track is dry rollers and hinges, not the opener. And a deep bang from a closed garage with nobody in it is a spring or a cable letting go, which is a stop-and-call event rather than a troubleshooting one.
10. It Opens or Closes on Its Own.
Rare, and worth taking seriously because an unattended door is a security problem. Check for a wall button stuck in its housing, a remote wedged under something in a car, water in the console, or a shorted low-voltage wire. An opener old enough to lack rolling-code security, roughly pre-1993, can genuinely be triggered by a neighbor's remote. Replace that unit for that reason alone.

Opener repairs run $150 to $350 depending on the part. Gear and sprocket kits, logic boards, capacitors, safety sensors, wall consoles, and travel-limit work all land in that range. On a unit under about eight years old, repair is almost always the right call. Replace instead when two or more of these are true: it is over fifteen years old, it has no photo eyes at all, the gear has already been replaced once, the logic board failed, or parts for the model are discontinued. Why Coastal Openers Fail Sooner
Salt air corrodes the sensor terminals and console contacts behind half the faults on this page, and it works on the door the opener is trying to move. An opener fighting a dry roller or a tired spring does more work on every cycle than it was built for, then fails as a drive problem months after the real fault started as hardware. When to Stop and Call
Call rather than keep testing if you see a broken spring above the door, a snapped or slack cable, a door sitting crooked in the track, or scorching and a burning smell at the motor head.
