Garage Door of Brunswick repairs and installs garage doors on Tybee Island, GA. Trucks run from our shop at 214 Rose Drive in Brunswick on the Chatham County route, about 100 miles and two hours up I-95 and out Highway 80. Call (912) 209-4079 for emergency garage door repair, spring replacement, opener service, flood-enclosure garage doors, or a wind-load rated install.
Tybee Island is a three-mile barrier island at the mouth of the Savannah River, 18 miles east of downtown Savannah at the very end of Highway 80. About 3,100 people live here year round and several times that many sleep here on a summer weekend. It is the farthest stop on our Chatham County route and one of the hardest places on the Georgia coast to keep a garage door alive, which is why the calls keep coming. We drive out from Brunswick rather than pretend to have a shop on Butler Avenue. The truck that handles garage door repair in Savannah crosses Lazaretto Creek with Tybee parts already on board.
The island breaks into four kinds of garage. On the north end, the Fort Screven Historic District and North Beach hold the converted officers' quarters, brick battery buildings, and 1940s cottages around the lighthouse, with small single openings and headroom measured in single digits. Mid-island along Jones and Lovell Avenues, the 1950s and 1960s block cottages have carports that were enclosed one at a time over the decades, in whatever width the posts allowed. On the South End around Tybrisa Street and the pier, and down the Back River side along Chatham Avenue facing Little Tybee, the newer houses stand on pilings with a ground-level garage underneath. And across the whole island, roughly four homes in ten are second homes or rentals, with an owner in Atlanta and a property manager holding the keys.
Each one needs a different conversation. The historic cottages need panel replacement and custom-width doors rather than a reframed opening. The enclosed carports need a new door sized to an odd opening and a low-headroom track. The raised houses need everything under them treated as a flood enclosure. The rentals need an opener a manager can run from a phone and a repair that happens between a Saturday checkout and a Saturday check-in.
Every parcel on Tybee is inside the special flood hazard area, the city requires new construction to sit above the base flood elevation with freeboard, and FEMA grant money has been lifting older houses onto pilings since 2022. That puts a lot of garage doors below the flood line, and a ground-level enclosure under a raised house is a flood enclosure in FEMA's terms, not a room. The rules for it are specific: flood-resistant materials, engineered flood vents sized to the square footage of the enclosure, and nothing in it that reads as living space. We install the vents, hang a steel door on galvanized or stainless hardware, and mount the opener head, the outlet, and the safety sensors as high as the layout allows. The door costs the same as it does inland. The details around it are what the Community Development Department and your flood insurer look at.
Savannah's islands sit on marsh. Tybee sits on the ocean, and the difference shows up on the hardware in about a year. Contractor-grade galvanized hinges, rollers, and bottom brackets fail in roughly five years on the beachfront. We spec stainless hinges and bottom brackets, sealed-bearing nylon rollers, powder-coated track, stainless lift cables, and coated torsion springs, and we size the spring to the actual door weight so it reaches its cycle rating. Even then, plan on 7 to 9 years from a spring set on Tybee instead of the inland 10 to 15, and rinse the hardware with a hose every couple of months. The coastal rust guide covers what to watch for.
Wind is the other line item. Tybee is inside the coastal wind-borne debris region under the Georgia amendments to the International Residential Code, and the garage door is the largest opening in the house. A replacement here gets a wind-load rated garage door with the reinforcement struts, heavier gauge track, and extra jamb anchors the rating calls for, and we hand over the design-pressure paperwork for the permit and the windstorm policy. On a 16-foot opening, two 8-foot singles with a center post carry the pressure more easily than one wide door and are often the cleaner way through plan review. Storm shutters for the openings on the sea-facing side are on the same truck.
Fort Screven cottages, mid-island carport conversions, raised South End and Back River houses, Butler Avenue rentals, and the commercial doors at the marinas and the pier. One crew, one written quote, and the quote is the invoice.

Call (912) 209-4079 →Tybee is the end of the road, literally. Highway 80 stops at the ocean. That is why the Chatham County truck leaves Brunswick with Tybee parts on board: stainless hinges, sealed rollers, coated springs in the common sizes, flood vents, and a low-headroom track kit. Most Tybee repairs finish in one visit.
32 years on the coast. One shop on Rose Drive. One number that picks up at 2 a.m. Pooler and Richmond Hill ride the same route.
Tybee is about 100 miles from our Rose Drive shop, I-95 north to Savannah and then Highway 80 east across Lazaretto Creek. That is close to two hours of driving, so Tybee rides on the Chatham County truck that is already in Savannah most weekdays. Call before noon and same-day is usually possible. Emergency calls run any hour, and we tell you the real arrival time when you call, not a window.
On Tybee, every lot sits in the special flood hazard area, so a ground-level garage under a raised house is a flood enclosure in FEMA terms. That means flood-resistant materials, flood vents sized to the enclosed area, and a garage door that will not be mistaken for living space. We install steel doors with galvanized or stainless hardware, mount the opener and the electrical above the base flood elevation where the layout allows, and install engineered flood vents in the enclosure walls. The door is the same door; the details around it are what the city and your flood insurer look at.
Yes, and most of the Tybee calls we take are rentals. We work with the owner or the property manager, not the guest, and we schedule around turnovers. For rentals we recommend a keypad plus an opener with app access so the manager can open the door for a guest or a cleaner without handing over a remote. Any repair comes with a written quote the owner approves by phone or text before work starts.
Tybee is open Atlantic, not marsh, so the salt load is heavier than anywhere else in Chatham County. We spec stainless steel hinges and bottom brackets, sealed-bearing nylon rollers, powder-coated or galvanized track, stainless lift cable, and springs with a corrosion-resistant coating. Expect 7 to 9 years from a spring set on the beachfront instead of the inland 10 to 15, and rinse the hardware with fresh water every couple of months. Standard contractor-grade galvanized parts fail in about five years this close to the water.
For a replacement or a new opening, yes. Tybee sits inside the coastal wind-borne debris region under the Georgia amendments to the International Residential Code, and the garage door is the largest opening on the house. We install wind-load rated doors with the reinforcement struts, heavier track, and the extra jamb anchors the rating requires, and we supply the door's design-pressure documentation for the permit file and your windstorm insurance.
